Award-Winning Tequila Reposado: A Guide to the Most Recognized Bottles

Not every bottle of tequila reposado is created equal, and awards help tell the difference.

This guide focuses on reposado expressions that have earned formal recognition at some of the world’s most respected spirits competitions. Whether you’re looking for a new bottle to explore or simply want to understand which labels have stood out in blind tastings, this is a curated starting point.

Before diving into the selections, a quick note on what makes a reposado worth knowing, and why competition results can serve as a meaningful compass when navigating this category.

What Is Reposado Tequila?

The word reposado means “rested” in Spanish, and that’s precisely what defines this category.

By Mexican law, a reposado tequila must age for a minimum of two months and up to one year in oak barrels. It sits between the unaged freshness of blanco and the deeper wood-forward character of añejo.

That aging window introduces a distinct tasting profile: the raw, vegetal intensity of agave softens and gains nuance, picking up notes of vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, and gentle spice from the wood. The result is a spirit that’s approachable enough for cocktails, yet complex enough to hold its own neat or on the rocks.

Reposado is often considered the most versatile expression in the tequila range — a sweet spot that appeals both to those discovering the category and to seasoned drinkers seeking balance over extremes.

Why Awards Matter in Reposado Tequila

Spirits competitions offer a structured way to evaluate quality under blind tasting conditions, removing brand recognition and packaging from the equation. For reposado tequila, where aging decisions, barrel selection, and agave origin all converge, these evaluations can meaningfully reflect what’s in the glass.

That said, awards are a useful reference point, not the final word. Different competitions weigh different criteria. Some prioritize consumer palate, others expert judges with trade backgrounds. A bottle recognized across multiple competitions is a particularly strong signal, while a single medal from a specific competition speaks more to a defined set of preferences.

With that context in mind, here are the reposado expressions worth paying attention to right now.

Awarded Tequila Reposados to Know

Don Nacho Tributo Reposado

The standout story of 2025. Don Nacho Tributo Reposado was named Tequila of the Year at the Bartender Spirits Awards (BSA), earning 97 points out of 100, one of the highest scores recorded in that competition’s history. The BSA is notable for weighting price into its scoring, making this a recognition of both quality and value.

Produced at its own dedicated facility in the Highlands of Jalisco (Los Altos), this is a fully artisanal tequila fermented with native yeast, double-distilled in stainless steel pots, and rested in American white oak.

1800 Reposado

Few reposado expressions have the consistency of 1800 Reposado across major competitions. In 2025, it earned a Master medal at the Tequila & Mezcal Masters (The Spirits Business) — the highest distinction awarded in that blind tasting — in the premium reposado category.

It was also named Best Reposado at the 2025 World Tequila Awards — a strong cross-competition result that reflects the breadth of its recognition.

Made from 100% blue Weber agave grown in volcanic soil and rested in new American and French oak, 1800 Reposado is a dependable, well-distributed expression produced by a family with over 250 years of tequila-making tradition. Its track record at blind tastings makes it one of the most credentialed bottles in the category.

Lobos 1707 Tequila Reposado

At the 2025 SIP Awards — the only international spirits competition judged exclusively by consumers — Lobos 1707 Reposado earned Best of Class Platinum in the 100% Agave Tequila Reposado category, the top distinction in that flight.

Lobos 1707 is a premium expression finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, which adds a distinct sweetness and complexity to its profile. It sits at the premium-accessible tier and has built a loyal following among consumers who appreciate a more structured, layered reposado.

Cutwater Tequila Reposado

The San Diego-based Cutwater Tequila Reposado has accumulated a wide-ranging awards record that makes it a notable entry in this category. It earned Best of Category at the ADI International Spirits Competition, a Gold Medal at the USA Spirits Ratings (95 points), and a Platinum at the ASCOT Awards, among others across multiple years of competition.

Cutwater produces its tequila in partnership with Destilería Orendain, a family-owned distillery with nearly 100 years of history in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. The reposado is rested in Cutwater’s own whiskey barrels, which are shipped from San Diego to Jalisco — a production choice that gives the expression its distinctive vanilla and oak character alongside roasted agave notes.

Its recognition across competitions with different judging approaches — consumer, trade, and expert panels — makes it one of the more versatile award-winning reposados currently available in the U.S. market.

G4 Reposado

Produced by the Camarena family — one of the most respected lineages in tequila production — G4 Reposado was named Best Reposado at the 2025 Sip Tequila Fest, a consumer-driven celebration of agave spirits. Judges highlighted caramel, vanilla, and cooked agave as defining notes.

G4 is an additive-free tequila made with traditional production methods, including tahona stone crushing and open fermentation tanks. It has cultivated a strong reputation in the enthusiast community for its transparency and quality consistency — and this award reflects that standing.

Reposado Tequilas Recognized at the SIP Awards

The SIP Awards (Spirits Industry Panel Awards) holds a distinctive position in the spirits competition landscape: it is the only internationally recognized competition judged exclusively by consumers, not industry professionals. Entries are evaluated through a double-blind process, with participants using curated tasting kits and the NEAT glass — an aroma-optimized tool designed to eliminate environmental bias.

This makes SIP Awards recognition particularly relevant for understanding how a reposado performs with the people actually drinking it, not just those evaluating it professionally.

In 2025, the SIP Awards received over 1,300 entries from 47 countries, with judging carried out by 297 spirit enthusiasts. In the 100% Agave Tequila Reposado category, several expressions stood out:

  • Lobos 1707 Tequila Reposado — Best of Class Platinum (highest distinction in the category)
  • JAJA Tequila Reposado — Platinum
  • El Mayor Tequila Reposado — Platinum
  • Casa Obsidiana Reposado — Platinum
  • Mi Campo Tequila Reposado — Platinum
  • Cierto Tequila Private Collection Reposado — Platinum
  • Corralejo Reposado — Platinum

The breadth of Platinum winners in the 2025 SIP reposado category reflects a strong overall showing for the style and points to a consumer palate increasingly drawn to well-aged, agave-forward expressions with balanced wood influence.

Closing Thoughts

Award-winning tequila reposado doesn’t guarantee a bottle will suit every palate, but it does offer a meaningful shortcut into a category with hundreds of expressions and varying production standards.

The bottles highlighted here have each earned formal recognition under blind tasting conditions, across competitions with different judging philosophies and audiences.

Whether you follow the consumer vote at the SIP Awards, the expert panels at the Tequila & Mezcal Masters, or the bar trade sensibility of the Bartender Spirits Awards, there’s a recognized reposado in this guide that fits where you’re coming from.

Start with any of these bottles neat, at room temperature, no ice, to understand what the distiller and the barrel had in mind. Then decide where it fits in your glass.

That’s the reposado experience at its best.
